There are a multitude of tagging sites available, the most well known is del.icio.us and cause we can’t miss out on an opportunity for cross promotion, did you know our partner company is developing www.cogenz.com; a site for shared book marking within the company?
And whilst we’re asking questions… did you read Christian Crumlish’s book last year ‘The Power of Many’? Tagging must be one of his answers.
Think of a tag as a key word. Where the word is an attribute or property you attach to a file to help describe it. You can ‘attach’ a word or group of words to a file and then search on the word and your results will show you all the tagged files together regardless of where they are stored. It’s a nicer way or organizing files in your pc’s memory or html pages than the very linear folders on offer. You can use as many words as you want and you can use what ever words you like. In 1998 when everyone was into information architecture as a formal practice in web planning, the language was restricted and refined for consistency. Tags helps move beyond this. If you want a cake recipe to be known as yummy, you can tag it. Imagine in the old days being allowed to file stuff under such an informal term! These days it’s hard to see pas the plethora of tag clouds on web 2.0 sites.
Today we’d like to tell you about Austria’s latest desktop tool; tag2find.
So tag2find ‘does what it say’s on the tin’. By using tag2find – an icon on your desktop - you will find everything (documents, movies, images, music, etc.) from your files. It does not matter where your files are stored on your disk, when you search for a tag term you get the whole list irrespective of where the file is stored.
With tag2find frees your files - if you move the file or save it somewhere else the tag sticks, until you change it! Only runs on Windows machines with XP or Vista, tag2find is in private beta testing – but you can register to join in the trial.
Here’s a screen grab for look and feel:
